Focus passage: 1 Chronicles 29:1-17
Somehow, we have become convinced that if I want more, then you must have less. We have been taught that there is only a finite amount of wealth in the world. The truth is that God’s treasury knows no limit. If God wants to give an abundant corn crop, farmers benefit. If God wants to let people discover a new vein of gold or river of oil, wealth will be produced. God can give without taking from others. When we look at the wealth of King David mentioned in 1 Chronicles 29:1-17, we can see the generosity of God in action.
- God gives so we can let go v.14 David is amazed at the wealth of the nation. We live in a time when everyone focuses on how little that they have. God provides what we need each day so that we can live without fear. I may not be rich, but I have what I need. I live with contentment because I focus on all the blessings that the Lord has given me rather than how much everyone thinks I should have.
- Blessed with an enormous dream v. 2 God’s generosity led David to an amazing dream. Because of God’s generosity, Christians often use the abundance of their blessings to glorify God and help others. They build schools and sponsor missionaries. They help the neighbor next door and the poor in their inner city. They have dreams to help others because they trust God to care for their needs. God’s generosity sparks the generous dreams of His people
- God provides even more so that they can do more v.3 David can’t out give God. The wealth of David in this text staggers the imagination. It allowed Him to almost single handedly build a golden temple all by himself. Those who have dreams of generosity for the Lord will find the Lord providing even more so that future dreams are even bigger than the last one. God wants His people to be generous in the world and show His love to the world through their charity. He will continue to provide so that they can care for others on His behalf.
There is a purpose for God’s generosity. God is generous so that His people can be generous. Generous people become a conduit for the resources of God into the lives of others. As we look beyond ourselves and begin to dream, God will provide the resources to make those dreams come true. Our God is a generous God whose treasury knows no limit. We see in the Bible people like David, Nehemiah, and Barnabas who were richly blessed by God and who turned around and used their wealth to bless the people around them. God’s generosity gives them and us an opportunity to do something that will be remembered for years to come. When God gives you a purpose, He provides the resources that you need.
